Dr. Wayne K. Kawalek grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he learned early that people who were struggling didn’t need pity. They needed someone who would actually show up.
He graduated from Colgate University, then earned his medical degree at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He built his early career in emergency medicine — board certified, high-stakes, fast-moving — and became a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He spent decades in the ER watching opioid addiction walk through the doors, be stabilized, and sent back out with nowhere to go.
So in 2012, at an age when many physicians were thinking about slowing down, Dr. K started something new.
On 2012, Clinic4RECOVERY opened its first office. The idea was simple: treat addiction like the medical condition it is, with the respect and consistency that any chronic illness deserves.

Dr. K believed that Buprenorphine was not a crutch — it was a bridge. Once his patients were stabilized and the relentless hunger for opioids was quieted, the real work could begin: getting a job, rebuilding a relationship, picking up a hobby, becoming present for their children again.
He gave every patient his personal cell phone number. In thirteen years, not one of them abused that trust.
He saw blue-collar workers and professionals, veterans and young mothers, people who had been in and out of rehab and people who had never sought help before. He didn’t have a demographic. He had a belief: that every person who walked into his office had more potential than their worst moment.
The Dash
Between the date a patient walks in and the date they walk out for the last time, there is a dash. That dash — that time — is where the whole story happens. The medication is just the beginning. The dash is the recovery.

In 2024, Dr. K stepped back from active patient care due to illness. His patients — many of whom had been with him for years — still ask about him. Still send messages. That is not coincidence. That is what happens when a physician treats people the way Dr. K did.
He remains Clinic4RECOVERY’s Founder and Medical Director. His philosophy, his forms, his way of asking “How the heck did I get here?” — these are woven into how we see and treat every patient, every day. Clinic4RECOVERY is his practice, still.
He is also writing his book. My Best Patients… is a collection of patient stories — the real ones, the hard ones, the triumphant ones — told by the doctor who was there for all of them.
